LG Refrigerator Warranty: How Long It Lasts and How to Check Your Coverage

An LG refrigerator bought in the US is covered for one year on parts and labor across the whole appliance, five years on the sealed refrigeration system including labor, and ten years on the linear or inverter compressor.

That ten-year compressor figure is the one LG advertises heavily, and the detail underneath it matters. For roughly the first five years LG covers both the compressor part and the labor to fit it. For years six through ten the published coverage is parts only — LG supplies the compressor, you pay the technician. Compressor replacement is a sealed-system job involving refrigerant recovery, brazing and recharging, so the labor share is substantial.

LG's linear compressors were the subject of well-publicised reliability problems and a class action settlement covering certain units sold in the mid-2010s. If you own a fridge from that era that has stopped cooling, it is worth checking whether your model fell within that settlement before paying for anything.

Coverage runs from the date of original retail purchase, and LG will ask for proof of it. Registering the product puts that date in LG's system and makes the lookup return accurate results.

The warranty applies to units purchased and used in the United States and installed, operated and maintained per LG's instructions. Repairs must go through LG or an LG authorized servicer.

Exact tiers vary by model line — LG's premium Signature and built-in ranges have published different terms from the mainstream line at various points. LG posts the full PDF warranty statement for each product type on its warranty page, and that document governs, not any summary.

If your refrigerator is not cooling but the freezer is, or vice versa, do not assume it is the compressor. Failed evaporator fans and defrost heaters produce similar symptoms and fall outside the sealed-system tier after year one. Get a diagnosis before assuming which tier applies.

LG serial numbers encode the manufacture date in the leading digits, which is a useful sanity check but is not the same as your purchase date — warranty runs from purchase.

LG's model codes are long, like LRFVS3006S. The trailing letters denote the finish, and you will need the whole string for parts.

LG's own structure already covers the expensive failure for five years with labor included, so a plan bought for years two and three is largely duplicating existing coverage. The genuine gap is labor on a compressor claim in years six through ten, and everything that is not the sealed system — control boards, ice makers, fans and door hinges — after year one.

LG Premium Care and retailer plans are both available. If you buy one, read whether it covers labor on a claim where the part is already covered by LG, because that is the specific gap you are trying to close and not every plan handles it cleanly.

Also note that food loss is excluded from the warranty and is often covered by extended plans and by homeowner's insurance. If a full freezer of food matters to you, that is a real consideration.
