PlayStation Warranty: How Long It Lasts and How to Check Your Coverage
Sony Interactive Entertainment warrants PlayStation 5 hardware — the console and the components in the retail box, including the DualSense controller — against material defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the original date of purchase. The warranty is valid in the United States and Canada.
Two details in SIE's published terms are worth knowing. First, the warranty is granted to the original purchaser only and is not transferable, so a second-hand console generally carries no manufacturer coverage. Second, registration makes no difference to the warranty — SIE states the coverage is the same whether or not you register the product.
The warranty explicitly does not apply to the system software preinstalled on the console or supplied through later updates. Software problems are handled separately from hardware defects.
After a repair, the returned or factory-recertified console is covered for the longer of 90 days from the date SIE ships it back, or the balance of the original warranty period.
Only Sony can confirm that, because only Sony holds the record. Use the official links below with your serial number for the real-time answer. Everything here is context to help you ask the right question.
How long is a Sony playstation under warranty?
| What's covered | How long | What it actually pays for |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 console | 1 year | Material defects in materials and workmanship in the console hardware, from the original date of purchase. Valid in the US and Canada. |
| Components in the retail box | 1 year | The items supplied in the box — including the DualSense wireless controller, stand and cables — on the same one-year term. |
| Serviced or replacement units | 90 days, or the balance of the original term | After SIE services your console or sends a factory-recertified replacement, coverage runs for the longer of 90 days from shipment or whatever remained of the original year. |
| System software | Not covered | Preinstalled system software, and software delivered via updates or upgrades, are outside this hardware warranty. |
The warranty runs to the original purchaser and is not transferable. If you bought your console second-hand, from a marketplace or from a reseller, the manufacturer warranty generally does not follow it to you.
Registering does not extend or improve the warranty — SIE says so directly. Registration is still convenient because it stores your console details, but it is not a condition of coverage.
Keep your dated proof of purchase. Because registration is not what establishes coverage, the receipt is what proves your warranty start date.
Controller drift is the most common PlayStation complaint. Whether it is covered depends on timing and on how SIE assesses it: a genuine defect inside the year should be handled under warranty, while drift developing after the year is a paid repair or a replacement controller.
Opening the console yourself is a problem. Removing the side panels to install an M.2 SSD is explicitly supported by Sony and does not void anything, but going further than the documented user-serviceable areas does.
Where to find the serial number on a Sony playstation
Every warranty claim starts with this number, and on most products it is somewhere non-obvious. Here is where to look, in the order most likely to work.
- On the underside of the consoleStand the console vertically and look at the bottom, or lay it down and check the underside. Remove the base or stand if fitted — the serial number label sits beneath it. It is a long string of digits printed near the regulatory text.
- In the console settings menuFrom the PS5 home screen open Settings, then System, then System Software, then Console Information. The serial and model numbers are displayed there without moving the console.
- On the retail boxSony prints the serial number on a barcode label on the outside of the packaging — the reliable option if the console will not power on.
- On the controller, inside the battery areaDualSense controllers carry their own serial number moulded or printed on the back of the unit. You will need this rather than the console serial if the claim is about the controller.
Photograph the underside label before you set the console up in a cabinet or on a shelf where you cannot easily get at it.
The model number and the serial number are different things and SIE may ask for both. Capture the whole label rather than just the long number.

What the Sony warranty does not cover
These are the exclusions that cause real claims to be declined. They are worth reading before you call, because knowing which category your problem falls into changes the conversation.
- System software, whether preinstalled or delivered through updates and upgrades
- Accidental damage, drops and damage from moving the console
- Liquid damage and damage from spills
- Damage from power surges, lightning and electrical faults
- Cosmetic damage including scratches and discolored panels
- Damage from opening the console beyond the documented user-serviceable areas, or from unauthorized repair
- Consoles bought second-hand — the warranty runs to the original purchaser and is not transferable
- Damage from use with non-licensed accessories or modified hardware
- Normal wear on controller components such as thumbstick surfaces and grips
- Consoles with the serial number removed or altered
Is an extended warranty worth it?
Retailer plans are the usual extended option for consoles, and SIE has at times offered extended coverage directly. The realistic failure modes for a PS5 are the disc drive, the cooling system and controller drift, and none of those are exotic — they happen.
The strongest argument for a plan on a console is not the console at all: it is that controllers wear out and drift, and replacing them repeatedly adds up. Check whether a plan actually covers the controllers separately or only the console, because that clause makes most of the difference in value.
Weigh it against console pricing. Consoles get cheaper over their lifecycle, so a three-year plan bought at launch pricing is insuring against a replacement cost that will have fallen considerably by the time you would claim.
As always, check your credit card — warranty extension on purchases is a common built-in benefit.
Common questions
How long is the PS5 warranty?
One year from the original date of purchase, covering the console and the components supplied in the retail box, in the United States and Canada. System software is not covered by it.
Do I need to register my PS5 for the warranty to be valid?
No. Sony Interactive Entertainment states that the warranty is the same whether or not you register the product. Keep your dated receipt, though — that is what establishes the purchase date.
Is controller drift covered under the PlayStation warranty?
A genuine defect within the one-year period should be handled under warranty, since in-box components are covered. Drift that develops after the year has run is not covered, and is usually resolved by paying for a repair or replacing the controller.
Does the warranty transfer if I buy a used PS5?
No. The warranty is granted to the original purchaser only and is not transferable, so a second-hand console generally comes with no manufacturer coverage regardless of its age.
Does installing an M.2 SSD void my PS5 warranty?
Removing the side panel to fit an M.2 drive is a documented, Sony-supported user procedure and does not void your warranty by itself. Going beyond that documented access, or damaging the console while doing it, is a different matter.
