Sony TV Warranty: How Long It Lasts and How to Check Your Coverage
Sony televisions sold in the US come with a one-year limited warranty from the date of purchase. Sony's published terms are straightforward: for one year Sony supplies new or rebuilt replacements for parts it determines to be defective, and supplies the labor necessary to repair a product found defective within that period. After the warranty period, labor charges are yours.
Sony's warranty document includes a clause worth knowing about: if repair or replacement fails to remedy the defect, Sony will refund the purchase price. That is a stronger remedy than most manufacturers commit to in writing, though it only applies after repair attempts have failed.
As with every TV brand, physical screen damage is excluded. A cracked or pressure-damaged panel is accidental damage, and panel replacement usually costs more than the set is worth.
Sony sells its TVs and its PlayStation consoles under different corporate entities with different warranties. If you are here about a PlayStation, use the PlayStation page instead — the terms and the claim route are not the same.
Only Sony can confirm that, because only Sony holds the record. Use the official links below with your serial number for the real-time answer. Everything here is context to help you ask the right question.
How long is a Sony tv under warranty?
| What's covered | How long | What it actually pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Whole television | 1 year | Sony supplies new or rebuilt replacement parts for components it determines to be defective, plus the labor to carry out the repair. |
| Labor after the warranty period | Not covered | Once the year is up, Sony's published terms make labor charges the purchaser's responsibility, even where a part is supplied. |
| Refund remedy | Within the warranty period | Where repair or replacement fails to remedy the defect, Sony's terms provide for refunding the purchase price of the product. |
Coverage begins on the date of purchase, so keep the receipt. Sony's registration system stores your purchase details and makes a later claim much simpler.
The warranty applies to products purchased and used in the United States. A set imported from another region is not covered by the US warranty and can be difficult to service here.
Sony's terms distinguish between what Sony supplies and what you arrange. For larger screen sizes in-home service is typical; for smaller sets you may need to transport the TV to a service center.
Panel-level failures — dead backlight zones, vertical banding, clouding — are the sort of defect the warranty is designed for if they appear within the year. Document them with photographs and a video as soon as you notice, since some of these faults are intermittent and can be hard to demonstrate during a service visit.
Burn-in on Sony's OLED models is treated the same way as by other manufacturers: a consequence of use rather than a defect, and excluded.
Where to find the serial number on a Sony tv
Every warranty claim starts with this number, and on most products it is somewhere non-obvious. Here is where to look, in the order most likely to work.
- In the on-screen menuOn Google TV and Android TV based BRAVIA sets, open Settings, then System, then About, and look for System information. The model name and serial number are displayed on screen. This is the easiest route on a wall-mounted set.
- Sticker on the back of the TVLook for a small black-and-white label on the rear of the cabinet, commonly toward the bottom left when facing the back. It carries the model name, serial number and electrical ratings.
- On the original cartonSony prints the serial number on a barcode label on the box, which is the practical fallback if the set will not power on and is already mounted.
Sony BRAVIA model names encode the series and year — for example XR-65A95L, where the trailing letter marks the model generation. Useful for establishing a set's age when the paperwork is gone.
Read the serial from the menu before wall-mounting. Getting it afterwards means taking the TV off the bracket.

What the Sony warranty does not cover
These are the exclusions that cause real claims to be declined. They are worth reading before you call, because knowing which category your problem falls into changes the conversation.
- Cracked, chipped or pressure-damaged screens — accidental damage regardless of cause
- Burn-in and image retention on OLED panels
- Damage from power surges, lightning and household electrical faults
- Cosmetic damage to the bezel, stand or rear casing that does not affect performance
- Damage from improper wall mounting or from the set being knocked over
- Repairs by anyone other than a Sony authorized servicer
- Picture and sound problems that originate in a source device, cable service, antenna or internet connection
- Commercial, rental or public display use rather than normal household use
- Products purchased outside the United States or with the serial number removed or defaced
Is an extended warranty worth it?
Sony Protect plans and retailer plans both extend TV coverage. The same reasoning applies here as with any television: manufacturing defects that were going to appear usually appear inside the first year, and the failure that is genuinely likely later is physical damage — which a plain term extension does not cover.
If you buy anything, buy a plan that includes accidental damage, and only where replacing the set outright would be painful. On a mid-range TV, three years of plan cost can approach a meaningful share of simply buying a new one later.
Sony's written commitment to refund the purchase price where a repair fails is a genuinely useful backstop within the warranty year, and it is worth knowing about before you accept a third unsuccessful repair visit.
Check your credit card benefits first — many cards add a year of manufacturer warranty extension automatically at no cost.
Common questions
How long is the Sony TV warranty in the US?
One year from the date of purchase, covering both parts and labor for defects Sony determines to be genuine. After that year, Sony's terms make labor charges your responsibility.
Will Sony refund my TV if they cannot fix it?
Sony's published limited warranty provides that if repair or replacement fails to remedy the defect, Sony will refund the purchase price. That applies to defects within the warranty period after repair attempts have not succeeded.
Does Sony cover a cracked TV screen?
No. Physical screen damage is accidental damage and falls outside the limited warranty, however it happened. Only a protection plan that explicitly includes accidental damage would cover it.
Is my PlayStation covered by the Sony TV warranty?
No. PlayStation hardware is warranted separately by Sony Interactive Entertainment, with its own terms, its own claim process and its own support channel. See our PlayStation warranty page.
